Montserrat is one of Catalonia's best-known day trips and combines well with a stay in Manresa.

You can go by car or by train. The best option depends on whether you want to park in Monistrol, drive up to the monastery or travel only by public transport.
From Manresa the road takes you towards Monistrol de Montserrat. From there you can drive up to the monastery area, park in Monistrol and take the rack railway (Cremallera), or go to the Aeri access and take the cable car.
We do not give a fixed journey time because it varies with traffic, your exact starting point and which Montserrat access you choose.
FGC line R5 links Manresa with the Montserrat access stations for both the Cremallera and the Aeri. The official Montserrat website notes that trains from Manresa connect with both systems.
This is useful if you are not travelling by car or prefer not to park on the mountain.

Both systems take you from the base up to the monastery. The choice usually depends on where you park or which FGC station you use.
The Cremallera connects Monistrol de Montserrat with the monastery in about 15 minutes. The usual frequency from Monistrol Vila is about every 20 minutes. Its station has free parking for around 900 cars, according to official information.
The cable car takes about 5 minutes and usually runs roughly every 15 minutes. There is also free parking at the lower station, according to official information.

You do not need to see everything. These are the clearest stops for a first visit.
The basilica is the spiritual centre of the sanctuary. It houses the image of Our Lady of Montserrat, known as La Moreneta, a twelfth-century Romanesque carving.
Visiting the Virgin's chapel is one of the most emblematic moments. The official website publishes separate hours for access to the throne; check them on the day of your visit.
The museum holds collections of old and modern painting, archaeology, iconography and religious art. It is one of the main cultural attractions on the site.
According to tradition, this is where the image of the Virgin was found. The path also includes the Monumental Rosary, with important Modernista works.
When it is running, it takes you up to Pla de les Taràntules for panoramic views and mountain walks. Check beforehand whether it is in service.
Montserrat offers walks from the monastery and harder routes such as the one towards Sant Jeroni. The official website describes a route of about 7 km and around 2 hours 30 minutes from the Sant Joan area. It only makes sense if you have time, fitness and good weather.

If you only have a few hours, focus on the monastery without long hikes.

With a full day you can widen the visit without trying to cover every mountain route.
Arrive early. Basilica, La Moreneta and the Montserrat Museum.
Lunch on site or a picnic if that suits you. Check café and service hours on the official website.
Choose Santa Cova or, if it is running, Sant Joan and a short walk. Then return to Manresa.

Before leaving, check the official Montserrat website for the status of the funiculars, basilica hours, access to the Virgin's throne, the museum and ticket or service availability.

For families, the monastery, viewpoints, the audiovisual space and short walks are usually easier than long mountain routes.
Montserrat's educational offer includes nature and funicular activities for children and schools when those services are available.

Montserrat and Manresa are linked on the Ignatian Way. The final official stage runs from Montserrat to Manresa, about 25 to 26 km according to the route published by Manresa Tourism.
If you are walking the route, Manresa is the natural arrival point after Montserrat.
